Hope and Assurance

This website was created for those acquainted with mental illness and in need of hope and assurance.

Question of the Month

Things are very hard and they have been this way a long time. I have seen a psychiatrist and also am seeing a therapist. They have given me a label of mental illness. What does this mean for me? I feel completely overwhelmed and without any hope of things getting better.

First of all, know that there is hope. God has not forgotten you. He has a picture of you indelibly tattooed on the palm of each of His hands. He is always thinking about you.

You have reached a place in your life where you need help and you know it. You can't do this on your own. It is too hard and too deep. You have sought out a doctor and therapist to help you and that is good. Also, seek out friends who will love you, believe in you, and listen without judging. They will be your lifeline to emotional well-being.

But even more important than professionals and friends is to seek out help from the Great Physician and the All Knowing Counselor, Jesus Christ. He put you together in your mother's womb. He knows all about you from before you were born until now. He knows what has gotten you where you are today and what can get you out. Go to Him and talk to Him as your dearest Friend.

You asked what this label of mental illness means for you. It all depends on what you allow it to mean. It can keep you stopped in your tracks for as long as you like and serve as an excuse for not doing and being many things. Or it can be the catalyst for exciting change and growth. Let your deep pain propel you to learn new skills and ways of thinking which will heal relationships and past hurts and serve the good of others. Let this be a time of discovering God's amazing love for you and learning His wisdom.

Then what God has allowed in your life will accomplish the spiritual, emotional, and physical good His love intended for you. God has plans in mind for you that are for your well-being and for a future full of hope. Rest in the knowledge He is working things out for your good beginning this very day.
