Question of the Month

Sometimes I hear voices that tell me what to do. Am I crazy?

A friend once told me that everyone has some degree of craziness. I have learned that what we do with our measure of craziness is what matters. Do we feed and coddle it and let it run wild or do we train and discipline it and make it abide by our rules? Let me try to explain.

Everyone at some time hears a small voice in their head that says something like this: “That was so stupid!” or “Can’t you do anything right?” or “Your nose is too big”. The purpose of statements like these is to create confusion and doubt. Unchallenged, these assertions cause one to focus inward. on oneself to the exclusion of healthy interactions and activities. Buying into their message encourages them to develop and increase until condemnation is all one hears and believes.

These thoughts are like a spoiled child who does and says whatever it wants, with no regard for others, and totally out of control of its parents.

As more and more time is spent with these thoughts and they are accepted as truth, they grow even deeper and darker. Not only do they speak now of one’s ugliness and stupidity but that harm and death is appropriate for someone so bad. The thoughts are now in control and are entertained to the exclusion of most everything positive and uplifting. As they become obsessive and deprive one of sleep, energy, and the desire to be involved in life, they become so perverse and bold as to direct one’s actions and cause such confusion that things which aren’t real are believed to be real. It is now that someone may say that they feel given over and lost to depression, despair, and destruction.

But, do not give up! You DO have a choice! You CAN get your control back. You CAN choose to believe what is life-giving and life-affirming. You CAN choose to listen to God’s spirit of love, hope, and healing.

You may ask, how do I do this? How can I ever change what has happened to me?

First, you must know what the truth is so that you can stand up and confront what wants to destroy you. The truth is that God’s Son, Jesus Christ, came to earth as a man to die in your place so that you can receive forgiveness for everything that you have ever done or thought that has angered God. Your personal relationship with God can be restored and you can ask God to save you from this rampant evil…and He will.

This is a battle for your mind and soul. Know that it will take time and consistent effort to win. You must fight with all your might for your very life depends on what you choose. Choose God and He will give you the wisdom and strength you need to oppose these horrible lies. He will bless you with the knowledge that you are loved and adored as His precious child. You will discover there is nothing He will not do to help you find peace. God is your Answer in this trouble and He will bring you through, alive and whole.

God’s instruction kit for this new way of thinking and acting is the Bible. It will teach and guide you and God’s people can support and encourage you on your way. Know that some of God’s gifts to you can include doctors, therapists, medications, mentors, and books to enable you to succeed in this journey. God will supply your every need and will work out all things for your good. Trust Him. Believe Him. Ask Him. You will not be disappointed.
